opal New Member United States 27 Posts	Posted 12/19/2012 5:21 pm I took my mom who recently began collecting foreign banknotes to the Baltimore Whitman coin show in November and she bought a few banknotes to be surprise gifts for other family members for Christmas. In a discussion with her today I had found out she spent over $200 on a Canadian banknote so I asked her if it was a 50 or 100 denomination and she replied that it was the 5. I'm unaware of any 5 dollar Canadian note that comes even close to $200 so I finally got her to show it to me and I can't believe what I am looking at. A 1954 Canadian 5 in barely VF condition (it has several creases and a fold) that the seller said was AU (What a joke!) listed at $225.00 and 'graciously' sold at $200 cash. The catalog only lists it at $125 and I haven't seen one sold online for over $40 in the past several months. Is there an error or a rare signature? (Beattie) I've looked and looked and can't find anything that would warrant this ridiculous price and I can't believe that any seller could be so brazen to price something so expensive and to rip off an unsuspecting customer. Any help would be appreciated, I've never encountered a situation like this before and would like to think that she unsuspectingly bought a note with a rare error on it at least. canuck1us Pillar of the Community United States 1002 Posts	Posted 12/19/2012 5:55 pm The note itself is a "Devil's Face" which makes it more desirable than a modified 1954 series note. You wouldn't find 10 of these uncirculated in sequential order for $100 for sure! It is hard to grade banknotes from photos but it does look like it could be VF/EF. One in VF condition with this prefix sold on ebay in November for $42 but yours looks better than that one. Canadian Coin & Currency had an AU50 listed for $174.95. There is an EF40 on ebay for a B.I.N. price of $100. I don't have my Charlton Catalog with me right now but will check it when I am home later. Based on this, I would say that your mother's note would be obtainable at around $75-$100. Report this Post to the Staff
