It looks like something hit the coin after mint PMD. Just my opinion.

Actually, I am thinking 'die crack' through the 'D', although quite an odd place to find die failure.
Local stress of the plating may well lead to zinc rot.

I also find it a bit odd, with the variation of the line thickness of the 'D'.

Does the west side of the 9 look like it took a hit? If so it may have received a bag mark that damaged the mint mark.

The last 9 is not as thick as the first 9 but either do not looked hit

The area I'm talking about is the 10:00 position on the first 9.
