It's not an error coin, (unless I'm missing something), so maybe this is the wrong forum to post, but I wondered if anybody had an idea what caused it? The "holes" are deep (there are bumps on the obverse) and kind of pyramid shaped. Very even spacing. Report this Post to the Staff

Finn235 Pillar of the Community United States 6130 Posts	Posted 10/15/2016 3:12 pm I've seen similar marks on a bolt on a toilet at work, I guess from some sort of wrench. Very possible a maintenance guy put a penny between the wrench and the bolt so it would get messed up instead of whatever was being tightened. Report this Post to the Staff

Just like what you would see if someone struck it with a hammer that has a slightly rounded face such as the one shown. The other side most likely had flat spots on the same area from the pressure. It's hard to see with all the gunk (tried to clean it off, but it's pretty stuck), but there are raised bumps. Wouldn't it stink if this were a 1943 copper? The hammer theory sounds as good as any.
