Improper storage (paper with acid + humidity and heat) will cause the clad layer to discolor without necessarily affecting the luster. From what I have seen, genuine errors of this type are very mushy because the machine is not calibrated to strike the pure copper core. It would also be significantly underweight. Do you have access to a jeweler's scale that can measure 0.01g increments? Report this Post to the Staff

If you can see silver on the coin, that is where the color has worn off the dime. This doesn't happen on a missing cladding. The dime collar is too small to accept a cent into it. note the reeds on the edge? They would not be there if it were a cent planchet. Report this Post to the Staff
Slamnbass Pillar of the Community United States 3644 Posts	Posted 11/08/2016 5:11 pm with the concensus however your single best tool for these type of errors is a scale-can pick one up for around 10$-normal dime weighs 2.26.
