1995 Kennedy Half Dollar (Possible Mint Error ) Help Newbie

Mike450 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 09/07/2017 8:38 pm Hi everyone I'm new to this site as well as to the coin collecting. I ran across this 1995kennedy half dollar. On the reverse side there's what looks like a hoke in the too part of the shield. Took a closer look with a magnifier and it doesn't appear to be man made. It's abut the size of a needle tip. Crazyb0 Rest in Peace 10197 Posts	Posted 09/07/2017 8:49 pm It is possible it is a "Struck-thru debris" which is a genuine mint error, not worth but a buck or so, no big deal. I'm troubled by the shape and inner "layer" for lack of better word/description. The inside ring and discoloration seems to be melted. Possibly by a soldering iron, that would pass the threshold melting point of cupronickel. My opinion is for the latter. If it had been a flame(lighter) more discoloration and a risen outside would be seen, not so w/hot metal tip. I'll have to try this some time... Report this Post to the Staff
moxking Rest in Peace United States 17900 Posts	Posted 09/07/2017 9:08 pm There are indications of the metal being pushed up around the hole which would rule out anything that happened while being minted. Most probably a sharp ended item of some description that pushed that hole into the coin. I certainly understand why you would ask, and Report this Post to the Staff
spru Bedrock of the Community United States 12477 Posts	Posted 09/08/2017 12:15 am Raised metal is visible to the NE of the indentation. That should not be there if it were a struck-through error. My vote is for Post-Mint Damage ( PMD). What caused it, I dont know. Maybe a small punch or even, as Crazyb0 suggested, the tip of a soldering iron. I hope this helps!
