Kool find, I'm sure someone put it in as a seeder.

Congrats! Almost looks like a metal detecting find. If so, kudos to them for putting this back into circulation, so that a collector can find it.

Just like how unscrupulous sellers of played out gold mines would salt the rock with gold to make it seeming still a worthwhile purchase, some sellers of coin lots will add lower value Indian Head cents to roll ends to make the 49 culls that also are in this roll seem like a good deal.

However, based on where you have posted this thread, my assumption is that you are searching through boxes of rolled coins from a bank rather than buying rolls on ebay or wherever.

Yeah we do refer to these as seeders if selling in a roll end, mix of coins etc.

It is purposely placed there to sweeten the deal, makes you want to search/buy more etc.

I used it in another way though.

It was purposely placed there to plant a seed for someone to start collecting.

Great find, congrats! I'm close to having searched 3/4 million cents and have yet to find one.

Nice find! I pulled three (1880, 1884, and 1888) from one box about a year and a half ago, but haven't found any since.
