a local auctioneer asked me if this coin would be valuable and why letters and digits are missing... icould detect a very faint digit 4 with a loupe, but am not sure I have never seen a similar coin before. any Ideas? thanks
my guess is a Grease Filled Die I find all kinds of cents w/ similar missing numbers and letters got a real cool one that has no date or any letters on it
Or the digit was weakly struck when the coin was minted, or the die was poorly made. The last A in CANADA is weakly struck and the TS in CENTS appears missing. With a stereoscopic microscope, you can at times detect different heights to letters. In fact, this is why you will often see ejection doubling on some letters but not others - its because of uneven heights in the letters. This is a nice variety though.
