Picked up this Liberty double eagle at our recent Fresno Coin Show. I wanted to avoid the super-common 1904 coin. The 1900 is also common but definitely less so than the 1904. It was priced at a reasonable premium over the gold spot price. What do you think?   |

Look MS63 with strong color and luster. Avoiding a 1904 was a good move. As is often the case with Choice MS gold, the reverse looks gem.

Just for the chatter on the coin I would say MS63 but it looks to me well struck so I am going to risk an MS64.

Thanks for the comments. This coin is graded PCGS MS-64. I tend to agree it's not very strong for that grade. The dealer had another example, graded MS-63 CAC in an old NGC holder. He had that coin priced about $700 more than the one I bought. The NGC coin was pretty nice but I thought the cheaper PCGS coin was a better buy.  |

It is a nice, solid 63. I do think 64 is a tad generous but big gold pieces can earn a 64 when pretty dinged up. Color and luster must be really strong.

Me too. Imagined ms63. Should not get rid of my 1890s I thought would be ms64  Edited by jecz79

The Rive d'Or coins sold for premiums in most cases. Most that I've seen are either accurately graded or slightly overgraded. I think this is a 63 coin that got the "pedigree bump" to a 64 holder grade. Either way, it's beautiful.
