I bought this recently without doing proper research. I'm thinking VF environmental damage but really am clueless on the series.

Would also love thoughts on its value and how best to preserve it. Thanks!

Not sure what to think on this one given the extensive corrosion, somewhere between VG and VF. Still a nice coin and variety to have. Is this a recent pickup?

VF Details (corroded) - looks like an old dug coin

I agree. Definitely think it was dug. Do you think a Verdicare bath would do it some good?

verdicare may help a little. probably would take several soaks and I dont think it would clean up too much of whats going on but it cant hurt

I can't decide if the Verdi-care (only one soak) helped our the hurt the appearance. Maybe I went a little too long.

it got rid of some crud around the letters. Overall I don't think it hurt anything.

I don't think it hurt anything either. I also would not do anything else to it. There's no fixing corrosion. Still a very cool draped bust cent variety to have in one's collection.

I think it looks marginally better, but not much you can do about that corrosion. It's a Sheldon-220 if you're interested.
