1985-D Dime With Weak Rims And Reeds. Weak Strike?

Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6648 Posts	Posted Yesterday 10:00 pm Ran across this dime in a roll. The obverse rim is basically non-existent. The other features are struck relatively well. The reverse seems to be a late die state, and the lower rims are also mostly missing. The reeds are weakly struck. I thought it might be a thin planchet, but the mass is right on the nose at 2.27g. My best guess is a weak strike, but it's a bit odd that the central devices are so well struck. Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6648 Posts	Posted Today 4H 43M ago It's a truly unusual problem. Because the rim is so flat, the coin almost looks broadstruck. It obviously isn't, because the dime is completely circular with the normal diameter. In looking at those other threads on 1985-D dimes, most of the coins have weakness that is localized to just the reverse SE quadrant with the word DIME, but mostly to the interior. I wonder why that specific area is affected so strongly compared to the others. Report this Post to the Staff
