Hello, seeking any info on this coin.It matches a number of markers for VAM 17 under San Francisco mint, but no reference under the Philadelphia mint.Could possibly be proof like.Breaks/overpolishing in lower hairline, also has broken 4th star, die crack thru E D S in United States.Has what appears to be a rim ding on reverse however under a loupe it looks like it may have been minted that way.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pleasantwilliam, welcome to the forum. you would be looking for this 1878 VAM designation only under the Philly listings as this coin has no mintmark, indicating it was minted in Philly. if it had an S mintmark, you'd only consult the San Fran listings.

from what I can see, that coin has 7 tail feathers, a short nock and a parallel arrow feather. consult the 1878 listings below those attributes on the VAMworld site. that'll get you going.

edit, a couple hours later:

there is also some over-polishing on the eagle & wings, plus I think I see a missing nostril (indicating an over-polished nostril). lots of clues to help you narrow your search. VAM-190? I was looking at VAM-132, but then saw this:

lots of other things to check that I cannot really see well in the pix, so... happy VAMming!
