Picked this FS-303 off ebay a little while ago. The Retained Cud was known but not listed, so JC listed it from this coin as RCD-5C-1883/2-01 (SN). Coin is now at PCGS.

Fantastic coin, tropicalbats!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Thanks! I'm hoping it will go low end MS and not AU. I don't really see any circulation wear on the high points but it has enough marks that I could see it grading a bit lower.

Die stages of this variety are well-known. You can see them at

True! Lots of known die stages on that page. I am quite sure JC would love to list all the die stages if images were submitted. So looking at the known die stages on the Shield nickel site, I can guess that the cud-01 for this year is actually FS-303 although not noted on cuds-on-coins as such. The coin in this posting is the only Retained Cud die stage listed for FS-303.

https://cuds-on-coins.com/shield-nickel-rcd/

And speaking of such, according to the linked Shield nickel page this coin would be an unlisted die stage between F-10b+ and F-10c as it has two cracks from the second 8 toward the rim.

It has arrived back from PCGS and went MS62, so quite happy with the result (cert 58923691 if you want to see the true view). I had FS-303 put on the label, but did not submit it as an error coin for the Retained Cud. With PCGS if a coin is graded as a mint error it gets a special number and can not be added to a registry.
