Anyone have this experience and willing divulge advice? I keep all of my gold in a safe deposit box at my bank, but am mulling getting a formidable safe to store less valuable, but bulkier silver items. Pros/cons? Particular safe recommendations? Anyone ever have a safe that was breached?

I use a gun safe bolted to the inside of a closet. Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

TL-15 bolted to floor in a secure but also hidden location. Security should have several levels. 1- don't broadcast your possession 2- Secure in a appropriate safe. 3- Find a non-obvious location for this.
I store items in both SDB and home safe. Unfortunately a true TL-15 or similar safe costs serious money. Most of the consumer safes you see around are awful. Additionally, if you insure you items some policies require rated safe.
If you have collectibles you have to worry about humidity and such but less so for just pure bullion.

The safe I'm considering is TL-15 rated. It would be installed in the garage. Not the best place, I know, but trade off is if it were placed in the house I can't see bolting it down.

I would make darn sure installing it inside your (hopefully) climate controlled home is not possible before committing to the rough environment of your garage. Where there is a will, there is a way.  |

If it comes to pass that the only place to put it is your garage you had better keep it 100% out of site. Just think how many times you open and close your garage door and anybody could see it.then you have to give strong consideration to climate and what damage that could cause.

Garage is not best place for a safe. Would it be climate controlled with dehumidifier? What happens if you forget to close the garage door?
My safe is in the basement. It's not a thick metal expensive safe. But I also have door sensors and security cams around the perimeter of my house, several indoor cams turned on when I'm away from home overngiht. I have a firearm. I keep some coins at home, some at bank box. My thinking is keeping them in two places is better in case one has failure like fire, tornado, flood, burglary.
As already said do not tell people you keep valuables, coins at home. Loose lips sink ships as they say.

I have S&W .22 revolver. Friend who owned the gun shop Zi bought it at approximately 50 years ago told me I should buy a larger caliber as the .22 would just tick off an intruder. I would also have to ask the intruder to wsit while I get the gun out of small safe ZI alresdy have. Then I would have to ask same intruder to wait a bit longer while I get 50 year old ammo that's stored in a separate location and load aforementioned gun. Hopefully I point the gun in the right direction as I've never fired it (my wife has...two rounds). I do have experience firing a .22 rifle though at clay pigeons, at Boy Scout camp, when I was 12, in 1962 (I hit one of three).

Most thieves will come in and go to the bedrooms and then look for a safe in a closet. While a high quality ($$$$) safe will protect valuables for a few hours, a determined thief can get in, especially if your not home for 8+ hours like while at work. You would be better off putting your valuables in a random box that's stored in an attic or basement. Something in conspicuous, it's not to say they won't find but most criminals want in and out and 90% of all people store valuables in their bedroom, closet or safe. So they go their first and leave. Also like stated above don't tell anyone what you have.

I have a full size gun safe in my den but it's full of guns so no coins there. If I bought another safe it would only hold a small part of my collection.
So, my coins will remain stored in bankers boxes. I'm usually at home and if I do run an errand I'm back in a half hour or less and I'm never gone overnight.
I keep a Ruger .357 magnum revolver for home protection and a Glock 21 .45 ACP as a backup. And, I'm a pretty good shot.

I have cameras surrounding my house IN PLAIN Sight with warning signs. 2 large German Sheppard dogs, 1 30-06, 1 pistol grip 12 gauge shot gun, 1 .22 Ruger pistol, 1 Taurus .40 cal pistol, and a Desert Eagle .50 cal handgun  what my dogs don't eat my weapons sill finish. (I also keep knives stashed all over the house)  My 'coin room' has a standard key lock on the door (which I replaced with a solid core door, security bars on the only window that over looks my back yard (no access to the front street area - and I had ballistic film installed on the glass. |

Sounds like you have everything covered, Dearborn.  A Desert Eagle 50 cal? Now that's a serious handgun. |
