1997 £1 Coin - Need Help Confirming Die Clash / Weak Strike Multi-Error

gabylosan New Member Spain 1 Posts	Posted Yesterday 4:13 pm Hi everyone, I wanted to share this 1997 round UK one pound coin from my collection. After checking it closely, I believe it features a significant multi-error from The Royal Mint, and I would love to get your expert opinions on it. Here is what I have noticed: • Obverse: Strong die clash marks (ghosting of the lions' limbs) in the left field in front of the Queen's face. The right side of the legend and the "1997" date are almost invisible / extremely weak. • Reverse: Ghosting lines from the Queen's profile behind the top lions, and the "ONE POUND" text at the bottom is heavily faded. • Edge: The "DECUS ET TUTAMEN" inscription is incomplete, leaving a nearly smooth area between the letters (reads like "E _ _ _ UTA"). • Rims: Slight die misalignment on both sides. The coin is uncleaned and shows natural circulation wear, but the clash details are quite sharp under angled light. Does this look like a textbook Die Clash combined with a Weak Strike to you? The coin's features are really mushy, almost like it has been eaten with acid. Is it definitely an authentic coin? Report this Post to the Staff

Sap Moderator Australia 16916 Posts	Posted Yesterday 6:21 pm I would agree that all of the "errors" you are pointing at are in fact signs that this coin is a counterfeit. Fake £1 coins made up a shockingly large percentage of the overall number of £1 coins in circulation - the figure of 3% was floated around in the early 2000s. This was the primary reason why the £1 coin was redesigned and modified in 2017 to add the bimetallic ring and other security features making it harder to counterfeit.
