Got A Tricky One - Industrial Silver Ingots

WolfStock New Member United States 14 Posts	Posted Yesterday 11:06 pm Hi all, I have some industrial ingots that I inherited from my father. I don't know the background, other than he said they were silver. Unfortunately he's not around to ask any more details about them. I'm looking to sell them, mainly to remove the uncertainty and disburse the resulting $ to rest of the family. Here's pics: I'm thinking best thing is to buy a test kit, e.g. standard JSP acid test kit. I tried all the standard stuff - magnetic, bleach, etc., and they did indicate probably silver. Can't tell the purity though without an acid test. I have both a metal scrap dealer and a good coin shop not too far away, that I'm thinking to take them to and see what I can get. Thoughts? Anyone seen this kind of thing before and know what they might be from? I've seen raw silver that used to be used for fillings, and it looked very different than this, so I don't think it's that. Of course there are tons of different industrial applications for raw silver. Report this Post to the Staff

Sap Moderator Australia 16916 Posts	Posted Today 12H 49M ago A typical coin shop won't know what to do with them, since they're not coins and not technically numismatic, and probably won't have the gear needed to test it. The scrap metal merchant is probably your best bet. Without knowing the fineness, I'd just be guessing as to their origin and original purpose. "Melted down coins" seems improbable, as there's no real point in making private unmarked ingots this small and if you wanted a bucketful of identical little things made of silver, you may as well have kept them in coin form. The standard, consistent shape each one has indicates some reason or purpose behind that shape; no idea what that might have been though. A good coin shop or jewelry store should have an XRF machine that can easily confirm metal content. "Industrial silver" would presumably be 99.9% minimum purity. An honest buyer should pay maybe 80-90% of spot silver price if they can verify purity. I presume these are uniform ingots. Do they all weigh the same? Coin shop does say they take scrap gold and silver, so I'm hoping they'd be candidate to take this - will be calling them today or tomorrow. Will let folks know what happens.
