Hello all. I was just curious about die markers for the 1964 SMS Kennedy. I've gathered a few things like a raised piece of metal hanging off the 4. Not much else. I have looked at a few pictures and noticed quite a few have a die marker hanging from Kennedys nose. How nice. I did want to pass a coin by you all. I am fully aware that the chances are slim finding one and also aware that this most likely is just some business strike. But the tone was unique to me so here it is.   |

HondoB in my world most definitely. I will say I got this coin with a full set in some aftermarket coin holder so here's to chasing that coin dream haha!

to the CCF Pictures are not really sharp enough to see the markers but I would say your your chances of having a SMS are between zero and nil, especially with it being circulated. |

JimmyD agreed. Without subjecting myself to the embarrassment of close up shots it has "something" resembling a small piece of metal by the 4 where I have seen pictures. Do I know what I'm supposed to see to match the pictures of real SMS coins. Absolutely not haha! The coin actually doesn't seem to be circulated. You might be noticing an over abundance of die scratches. Pure overkill. Other than my theory of the odd tone. That's all I got sadly. Oh and a die line going up Kennedys nose which is just my theory

 I don't want to confuse with another picture and I don't want to beat a dead horse over the topic. But this is the same coin. Just low light compared to high light on the previous pictures. Anyway, it's a fun topic for me either way. Let me know if you get word on some die markings or anything else. Thanks |

Just to get the notion out of your head, with the limited number of 64 SMS Kennedy halves struck why would these come into play when identifying an SMS coin. Quote:

Well my thinking was that they used a specific set of dies for the SMS coins. So by process of elimination and some very needed luck. I could notice if the coin still has fresh die polish lines which would fade very quickly. Maybe a couple hundred presses before they wouldn't seem so dramatic, observe the appearance of the coin, locate some similarities between the 2 dies used, if in case a Christmas miracle happened and I stumbled upon one. People hunt for the unobtainable all the time with coins. Might as well educate myself a little just in case.
