Picked up yesterday from the bullion bin at my local coin shop, the South African crown of 1960, commemorating 50 years of the Union of South Africa, and depicting the Union Buildings in Pretoria, residence of the President and seat of the Executive branch of the country's government.

This piece is intriguing because, contrary to previous South African commemoratives, the monarch's portrait does not appear. This is probably to present the full armorial bearings, which incorporate those of the constituent members of the Union (Cape Colony with the anchor at top left), enlarged from their appearance on the two-shiling coin. (A different version of the same coat of arms appears on the half crown.) Of course, South Africa officially became a republic shortly after.

I've previously posted in this thread about the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, with my focus being on the bridge. That discussion overlooked a major component of the coin's reverse design - the San Francisco Ferry Building. It's time to make amends!

The San Francisco Ferry Building/Terminal, with its iconic clock tower, opened on July 13, 1898, and developed into a very busy transportation hub for visitors/commuters traveling to San Francisco. It was very busy until the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 - the bridge contributed to the decline of ferry traffic for visitors/commuters and thus the activity level at the Terminal. (It's somewhat ironic that the half dollar features the Ferry Building as part of its design, though the Terminal's future decline was not fully known in 1936.)

Nice addition commems, thanks for correcting the record.

While I have traveled over the Bay Bridge I have never visited the terminal building.
