I previously posted an advertisement from February 1893 (before the Exposition opened - the Exposition opened May 1, 1893) that alerted potential buyers that stores/merchants across the country were then selling the souvenir coin. (You can see it here: 1892-93 World's Columbian Exposition - Casting A Larger Net.) A few months earlier, in December 1892, just after the Exposition Company had received its first batch of coins from the Mint, an advertisement for the coins announced that the souvenir 50-cent pieces could be acquired from local banks or via mail order for $1.00 per coin. I like how the Exposition Company hyped its "sense of duty" to deal directly with "the people" and reject offers from speculators! How could anyone with even a passing interest in the coin refuse such altruism?! nickelsearcher Moderator United States 15971 Posts	Posted Today 12H 42M ago This advertisement is pushing hard on the 'for the people' theme. Interesting read, than you for sharing it. It's a bit misleading in that the World's Fair Directors did not have 5,000,000 souvenir half dollars in their treasury. The authorizing legislation allowed for up to 5,000,000 coins to be minted. By the time of this advertisement the Fair Directors had possession of 950,000 1892 dated coins. Appears that the 66,000,000 Americans at the time were just not that interested in owning one of these fabulous souvenir coins. I recall your prior reporting that nearly 2.5 million of the 4 million 1893 dated coins were returned to the mint destined for the melting pot.
