Quote: Here's another note issued by the Cincinnati & Little Rock Slate Company, a $1 note with engraved back (Rothert 409-2)... Nice example and interesting background. Thank you for sharing.

This isn't anything particularly special, but I was happy to add it to my Arkansas note collection today - a $10 1929 Type 2 note from The FNB of Conway, Arkansas. Conway is a city in central Arkansas about 30 miles north of Little Rock. This charter was the only issuing bank for Conway and also for Faulkner county. The bank was chartered on June 30, 1933 and merged and became part of Regions Bank in 1998. With the late charter date, the bank only issued 1929 Type 2 notes in denominations of $5, $10 and $20. A total of 6926 notes were issued, with 2/3 of those being $5 notes. There were a total of 1718 $10 notes issued. There are currently only five $10 notes and a single $20 note in the census, with only one of those graded higher than this one. There are no known $5 notes from this charter.

The "Cincinnati and Little Rock Slate Company" reminds me of the "Hollow Sword Blade Company" which operated in the time of the last Stuarts, using a corporate charter issued for a totally different purpose to evade the monopoly of the Bank of England.
That Conway note is in quite spectacular condition for a small-size National.

That's a beautiful Conway note Hokie. Only 6 notes known and this high a grade sounds pretty special. Is it because more are likely to be found?

Thanks, CoolBreeze! That wasn't really a good choice of words for me to use, as it is relatively rare and in nice condition.
However, many National Banks have few known surviving examples, so I guess I'm becoming a bit jaded looking at the population reports. For example, about 1/3 of the national banks in Arkansas which issued small size notes have 10 or fewer total known surviving small size examples.

I found this an interesting piece of merchant scrip. It's a remainder note from issuer J.B. Horne in Hamburg, AR. Hamburg is a small town in southern Arkansas founded in the late 1840s, and is the county seat of Ashley County. Rothert lists only a 25 cent note from this issuer, and he mentions that he was not aware of other denominations. This unlisted note is identical to the 25 cent note pictured in Rothert's reference, other than the denomination. The "Issued Only on Deposite" statement is a bit unusual. I have a few notes stating simply "Received on Deposit" or "Received on Deposite of xxx", but this variation is new to me. By the way, the obsolete spelling "deposite" is frequently seen on these Civil War era scrip.
