Hi everyone,
I'm considering buying the 8 reales pictured below and would appreciate opinions before I commit. This would be my first Carlos III pillar dollar.
The coin: Mexico City, 1761, assayers MM. Weight 27.00 g (standard 27.07). The photos are the seller's — the coin is not in hand, so I have not been able to run a specific gravity test.
A few things I've looked at, for whatever they are worth:
The weight sits in the upper third of the range I found across eight auctioned examples of the same year (26.79 - 27.04 g).
The edge carries the laurel cordoncillo, continuous and even, with no casting seam and no filed flats. I was not able to locate either of the two junction points left by the cerrilla, and there is no change in the direction of the leaves anywhere around the edge.
Legends, rosettes, crown, globes, waves, the shield and the castles and lions look decent enough to my eye, with the interior detail intact — but I don't have the eye for this series yet.
I'd be grateful for any opinions, on anything you see. Happy to post more photos of any area — I have the full edge in several shots.
Thanks in advance.
