1884 Morgan Dollar: Lamination, Or Post-Mint Damage?

Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6399 Posts	Posted 04/01/2010 6:14 pm Here's a circulated 1884 Morgan dollar with an unusual feature across the obverse field, continuing into Miss Liberty's lips. This area is indented below the surface of the field, with a distinct edge that you can find with your fingernail. I'm guessing it is some kind of lamination or planchet defect, but I would appreciate some input. Manufacturing defect, or post-mint damage? Laminations are basically one-of-a-kind errors, so there probably wouldn't be any more just like this one (if it is a lamination). Maybe I'll describe it as the unique Hare-Lip variety! The dark stain sits inside that linear depression that runs from star #4 up through Miss Liberty's lip. I suppose this mark could be damage but it looks like a planchet defect to me. SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 04/02/2010 7:01 pm Almost certainly a planchet defect, I'd think, and likely pre-strike rather than a later peel. The lip seems to retain strike through the missing metal. Report this Post to the Staff
