I'm no expert, but I do see something extra on the ear. I think that the lower ear lobe looks about right and what I see just above that is probably a gas bubble. It sure looked like a double ear lobe when I first saw it but I noticed the gas bubbles on the beard and that made me think that is the most likely culprit.
Of course, what I think might be gas bubbles on the beard could just be reflection.
I will try to take another picture and see if that helps. It looks a lot like the one you posted but mine seems to have just a bit more of the double line on the bottom of the ear lobe.
John1- so it IS doubling? Does that mean that the coin was struck twice? or is there a mistake on the die?
I know there are at least two kinds of doubling and I get a headache (no kidding) trying to learn this. I finally, I think know what Machine Doubling looks like and it is not like this coin.
I don't think the OP's coin is a DD,it looks like it took a hit on the ear lobe. The coin was not struck twice, DD's are on the coin die. The only coins that are struck more then once are proofs. John1
