Mexico 1 peso 1978 open 8 found yesterday (not the best condition coin):

Mexico-1-Peso-1978

Mexico-1-Peso-1978
Looks like DDO in date and mintmark.

Great photos! It's nice to see what the open 8 variety looks like. Thanks for posting.

Is there a premium with this variety? Just wondering.

it looks like classic MD; I see no serif separation.

Mac,

Type in 'MEXICO Peso 1978' on the coin look-up tool at

http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspx

where it says 'search terms' and you should see the elevated premium that the 1978 open 8 one peso coins have in MS grade.

fyi,
mdpmedia

Wow, I was not aware of the "open 8" variety--very nice premium!

Carlos Amaya calls out this doubling in his "Illustrated Price Guide of the Modern Mexican Coins 1905 to Date." It is key 1p-1978-6. He IDs 13 varieties of one pesos of this date. Carlos is really into this.

Looking closely I do not see a knot in Morelos' scarf. Double error!!

Well...despite Carlos Ammaya's enthusiasm, doubling like this isn't a variety since it's not present on the die. It happens randomly to any coin.
This date style is a true variety for 1978, and I wonder how many 1978 dies have this 8? I will post the picture of my coin.

Thank you so much for pointing out MD vs DD. I did some research using the threads on this forum and now understand the mechanics.
