The 1988 $5 was the first, and it became the "standard size" for aluminium-bronze $5 coins. Any $5 coin in the catalogues that's not bimetallic or precious metal, will probably be this size: Year of Space, ANZAC, Sydney Olympics, etc.

No coin is a bad investment if you like the coin. I have a heap of UK copper nickle crowns that are virtualy worthless be I like them i like the look and feel of crown size coins and with my lousy eyesight the bigger the coin the better. There is nothing wrong with a nice big fat golden looking coin. Sorry Sel I missread the post
