drdave Pillar of the Community United States 721 Posts	Posted 02/28/2012 5:48 pm Has anyone else seen this? Can you explain it? There seems to be two types - a large moon and a small moon. It appears on the right side of chimney rock a little more than halfway up. It is a half-moon or a moon going behind chimney rock. It is specially noticeable when tilted in the light the right way. The closeup photos are tilted and thus are slightly out-of-focus. I have found a few examples of each, right when these quarters came out. Rob213 Valued Member United States 83 Posts	Posted 02/29/2012 6:53 pm I think it's some surface buckling of the die. I've seen a couple just like that and I have one with a break in the same spot. It must just be a spot on the die that the stress gets concentrated due to the design. Report this Post to the Staff
stewart Pillar of the Community United States 1126 Posts	Posted 02/29/2012 8:33 pm That area of the die seems to be very prone to die chips But I would still send some pictures to Dr Wiles as mentioned above. For an initial contact. Then possibly send it in to him for first hand inspection. Because you just never know. You may have a discovery coin. Which is a very cool thing and quite an adrenaline rush.
