Help Identifying Chineese Cash Coin

Sap Moderator Australia 16952 Posts	Posted 05/06/2012 08:49 am The "Yuan" is old "seal script" or similar and the "tong" is oddly shaped too, but the other characters look more orthodox. I believe it's a Vietnamese imitation of the old Chinese coin, one of a class of coins known as "floaters" because they're so thin and light, they'll float on water. Check the size and weight; genuine Song Dynasty cash are typically about 3 to 4 grams and over 25mm across. The Vietnamese floaters are typically less than 2 grams and smaller than 22mm across. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff
manymore Valued Member United States 347 Posts	Posted 05/06/2012 12:03 pm According to Chinese sources I have seen, this coin (å.ƒä½'e€šå®) is usually attributed to the Tran Dynasty (e™ˆæœ) of Annam (Vietnam) and is believed to have been cast during the years 1251-1257. One article specifically stated that it is not considered a "floater". This Chinese website was selling the same coin about a year ago for about US$0.50 (3 yuan). Gary Report this Post to the Staff

It is one in a series of unofficial coins, typified by the An Phap coin, probably cast in the 17th/18th century. The inscription reads Nguyen Huu Thong Bao, characters taken from N.
