I noticed this just recently.
Is this normal for this issue?

I'll have a look at mine when I remember where I stored it.
My database tells me that mine is number 11750 of 11845 and I paid $77 for it.

This is odd, I have had a look at all my other nclt coins ( I have hundreds of them) and they are all normal orientation for Australian coins.
I wonder why this one was made this way
I find it strange that an Australian coin is minted "coin orientated" when all other Aussie coins are "medal orientated"

I noticed that Peter Stirch has on of these listed on ebay
I have emailed him to ask which way his coin is orientated.

I think at some stage sovereigns were made with coin orientation, but I don't know if Australian sovereigns followed this trend.

Yes, the original Sydney sovereigns and halves were "coin-oriented" (i.e. the opposite to normal Australian coins).
