More big silver arrived today! 1687 Crown - King James II:  1741 Crown - King George II:  I've wanted these coins for ages and decided there's no time like the present! I now have at least one crown from each reign from Charles II to Elizabeth II except for William IV and Edward VIII when no crowns were issued for circulation. |

Wow, what a nice pair. Interesting to see how the long wigs changed little in that 54 year gap and the coin design.
Noticed your 1741 is the roses coin too - beautiful!

In just a few more days, another early Georgian shilling appears for sale and I grab it.   1720 Silver shilling, roses and plumes, Fine with scratching on King's portrait (Possibly old monograms, cuts appear very old - smooth edges). Cleaned in the past. Found out the Roses and Plumes means the silver was supplied by the "Companie for the recovery and usage of Pit Coale and Sea Coale" - seems rather archaic language for 1720 - usually the extra "e" was very ye olde Shakespeare and by 1720 all you had left was a long "s" and the " 'd" for "ed". Could be getting 2 more early 1700s shillings as well. I should have got it last year so it could celebrate its big 300th - well the SSC coin will in 2 years Edited by Princetane

Lovely old coins Princetane.  Guess I know who I'd be bidding against on ebay if any such coins were started at a low price. It's an unfulfilled fantasy of mine to own an Elizabeth I coin. I'm not going to find any of them noodling am I? |

Machinmachinman - Noodling maybe not - but seriously these coins don't cost the earth, its all about condition.
Mostly with 16th to 18th century silvers you see coins that cost high hundreds and thousands, often these are near flawless examples with little wear or the rare dates and types.
The truth is that you may notice many of my pre Queen Victorias are low grade (Fine and downwards). The Lizzie and the Georges are all VG - Fine examples and often have some flaw (Which is fine given these are 300+ year old coins). Because of this the price drops astronomically to around $100 or so per coin for the Elizabethan stuff (Shillings, but sixpences and smaller coins can be cheaper). The George I pair cost me in the $70 - $100 per coin.
Whilst not a noodling price - $100 is not exactly unafordable or breaking the bank for such a historic coin. However if you want uncleaned and unscratched ones in high grade, then prices go up.
Coins that old often increase 2 or more times per grade - example $100 in Fine, $250 in VF and $800 in EF etc.
I actually find getting such coins on the market is harder than price. Already those other 18th century shillings I want have bids on them. Just got lucky in buying the ones I have. Especially in NZ, the number of Elizabethan and George I shillings for sale is very limited and you take what you can get as the cheaper end of the market will attract more collectors than expensive ones.

Bicken - roots of a promising collection there. Nothing too scarce - but historic though. Any ideas on which coins you want to collect, all denominations and eras are exciting. For beginners I would not go past pennies and halfpennies, followed by coins minted after 1946 - many interesting types and mostly very affordable. Of course the small silver from 1920 onwards is not that costly either. |
