Kind of concerned for my LCS. Gave me good deals, but almost too good. 87 and 01 ASEs, circulated (or "not market friendly") for $36 each. 21 Morgan XF, 2 22 Peace BU, 25 Peace BU cleaned-- 2 for $25, 2 for $26. PF 69 Marshal's Service Dollar for $30. 07D Barber Half for $13.

I know that the modern Half Eagle commems aren't that popular (just look at the final sales figures), but I personally like them and get the proof issue each year (but haven't yet pulled the trigger on this year's with the price of gold at all time highs, hoping it will be cheaper in the future )

Quote: I got the ones with the feather one it Those Constitution Bicentennial coins have the highest mintages of any of the half eagle commemoratives. I did kind of like the obverse with the eagle holding the quill pen. The reverse with the feather was just kind of so-so to me. As the 2nd issue of the half eagle commemoratives, they were still a fairly new item with a good amount of interest and sold well with nearly 900,000 sold. From that high point in 1987, the sales have dropped off drastically with only about 7,500 each for the 2 issues in 2024. With gold at all-time highs, just about all of the commemorative half eagles have lost any numismatic value and are pretty much selling at gold content value. That's a shame IMHO for the issues with much, much lower mintages.

That's a shame IMHO for the issues with much, much lower mintages. This makes it possible to occasionally grab the earlier issues for significantly less than melt. A month ago from ebay I added this to my stash. Of the 16 commemorative $5 I've purchased from ebay over the years, 15 have purchased for less than melt (I really wanted the Civil War piece and paid fairly close to melt). My first purchase was the 1987 Two piece set with the Dollar for $35.80 (when melt was $400)

Wow The coins were worth over $800 in melt at the time and that seller sold 2 of these sets via buy it now at that price on that date. The seller isn't an ebay newbee either. The seller has over 2000 sales with 100% feedback, but only 7 feedback ratings in the past year and has nothing currently for sale. At that selling price it's definitely a strange sale. It might have made sense if it was a poorly bid auction, but not as a buy it now.

Some of these older sets are being passed down to non collectors (probably due to original owners passing). I'm on ebay alot searching for deals. I have a lot of stuff in my collection I never would have purchased......except that the price was too cheap to pass on.

Quote: @keevan & SilverSkunk,
two coins i'd love to add to my stash! nice acquisitions! Thanks Pink. I bought a 1885 CC MSD MS65 too to keep it company the other day. It may be a horde coin as well but its still the lowest mintage "CC" there is and I was lucky to get it for the price I did. Bullion Exchange had one left for $200+ less then others were selling them for and it being from a horde put it within reach of a pensioner like me. I couldn't be happier and cant wait to get it.
