Question About Steam-Powered Coin Presses

One thing I can say is that Carson City Press #1, which is still in operation at the Nevada State Museum, was still steam-operated when it was taken out of service in 1893. It was converted to electric power in 1930 to rejoin service at the Philadelphia Mint. So, figure somewheres after the turn of the century. I don't believe that New Orleans, which minted until 1909, ever struck a coin other than under steam power. Report this Post to the Staff

Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 04/19/2007 12:08 pm No exact date yet but I think I've narrowed the time period. It would have to be after the development of a practical AC moter system so that would place it after about 1890 (AC motor invented in 1888)and it probably wouldn't be practical until the city had a good electrical power system. That was accomplished before 1920. It may or may not be relevent, but the Austrian mint converted their presses from steam to electric power in 1907. Report this Post to the Staff
