Rare Variety Indian Head? 1808/1908 Die Break?

larrw New Member United States 20 Posts	Posted 03/16/2013 3:52 pm Hello all, I dont Post alot but When I cannot find information on the web for something like this I post it here :) Was going through a bag of common indians that I bought about a year ago and something just didnt look right on this one. Sorry for the bad photos, I was using my cellphone to take the pictures. I dont know how to make my scanner zoom...... Anyways, here it is, Looks like a 1808/1908 to me. On the back underneath the C in cent is a small die break that runs to the wreath. Any information would be nice. I plan on keeping it though because I keep stuff like this. Thanks. beaglebailey Pillar of the Community United States 716 Posts	Posted 03/16/2013 5:21 pm This appears to be quite common on the date of IHC series, where the lower loop of the 9 runs into the upper loop. It is not a variety. I'm not positive of the reason for it but I suspect that its because prior to 1909 the date was hand punched into the working die. Many times it took more than one blow to get a satisfactory image. Also, there may have been many different date punches used. Either one of these may account for the different shapes of the 9 in the date. Report this Post to the Staff
Drsandman2 Pillar of the Community United States 1374 Posts	Posted 03/16/2013 11:45 pm That is right, the they started punching the date into the hub starting 1909. Thus, from this point forward the only way a date can be doubled is if it's a double die. However, mint marks are another story. What you see below the C in CENT is most likely a clash, and not a die crack. Neither one would command a a premium on this coin.
