As we move backwards into 19th century, we have seen several national states being founded. Italian cities and states were united into one nation starting from 1860 onwards. Greece was part of the Ottoman empire as was Bulgaria. The Habsburg empire controlled most of Central Europe.

Finally Belgium had been the battle ground where Napoleon was defeated. After a tentative union with the (newly founded) Kingdom of the Netherlands, Belgium gained independence in 1830 and elected Leopold as the first King after the constitution had been adopted in 1831. This brings us to my earliest Belgian coins:

The 5 Francs 1833:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Second-Edition!-Ended-At-1492-Waiting-On-1491

This design was used until 1849, but the early series have incuse lettering on the edge.

... and finally a poor grade 5 centimes of that same year.

Minting of 5 Francs and 10 Centimes started in 1832. The first is rare and the second hard to get...
It would take over 20 years before all elder currecny was withdrawn.

1 cent
1833
This money was used in the prison of Gand. Real cash money would make corruption realistic.
Corrupt gards would play a roll in black market and drugs sale.
