500 Lire 1959. With over 19 million coins minted this is a common year. The 500 Lire silver coin was the highest denomination in circulation. Since bank notes were circulating in parallel, it was not seen too often. Mintage numbers were low from the late sixties onwards and most coins were included in mint sets. And the date stamp... is on the edge in raised characters. The reverse pictures Christopher Columbus's ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. That's why the coin used to be called 'Caravelle' (the type of ship in italian)

France 1 franc 1959 - the last of the old aluminium 1-franc coins, and the last of a denomination that dated back to the Revolution. The New Franc, worth 100 old francs, replaced it the following year.

Canada 1959 50 cents, PL-66 Cameo. The highest graded coin in my collection, and part of my PL birth date set. (Not bothering to try to get the best picture; you get the idea).

AUSTRIA 1959 50 schilling; 0.900 silver; 34mm; mintage= just over 3 mil. including 800 in proof. Commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Liberation of Tyrol. <this was in with a mixed non-USA bullion purchase when silver was ~ $30/oz.>

cool coin muddler, very cool that you got your from circulation. And again funny how some of the same coins get posted. I had decided last week to post this same coin, only wish I could capture how the gold toning really looks. 1958 Canada dollar

MEXICO 1958 1 PESO; 0.100 silver; 34.5mm; mintage = ~41.9 mil. : The 'infamous' ten percent silver Hidalgo peso. I believe these were originally given a silver wash to make them look like high silver content when new. They're beautiful when fresh from the mint. But the shine doesn't last long. A few weeks in circulation or any contact with finger oil causes these to begin an immediate downhill slide toward tarnished ugliness.
