Hey everyone,

Just wondering has anyone ever come across the ancient Greek character of Medea on Greek or Roman coins. I'm working on something and need to get images of Medea particularly ones dated around 1st cent bc to 1st cent ad (have wall art and vases, trying to find coins and jewellery).

Looking for any parts of her myth on coins, her and Jason or killing the children etc... Anyone come across her on coins before?
Thanks for your time

Jo

Surprisingly, the imagery of Jason and any of the characters surrounding him almost never appear on any coinage. I would assume that his is because the story of Jason and the Argonauts did not, apparently, gain much popularity in the ancient world until the Hellenistic period, by which time coinage designs had become somewhat fixed and most cities had already decided upon their local imagery to be used on coinage.

Unlike more well-established Greek myths (such as Hercules), the locations mentioned in the Jason story do not seem to have taken much pride in their association with these myths. Not enough to boast about such association on their later coins, in any event.

Hi Jo, I am fairly sure there are no coins containing an image of Medea though I could be wrong however there are some coins from Larissa that contain images of Jason. Check out the wildwinds page for Larissa and search for Jason. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...rissa/i.html
