I'm surprised he still has that coin. I remember those days of $48 Double Eagles. $5 Liberty's in BU were selling for $18-20 at that time. Ah, the good old days.

It was my father's birth year so it will eventually go to my grandson. At which point he will probably head for the nearest "We Buy Gold" outfit.

I got this 1914 D $2.5 in a bag lot of "foreign coins and medals" from an on-line auction I could tell was one of the rare times the people putting on the auction truly didn't know what was in the lot. There was about 50 coins or so. I think I paid abut $350 for it because I spotted a Missouri Centennial 2 x 4 in the pile along with some other silver coins. As I dump out the bag on my kitchen table and am going through the coins, mid way through my eyes become affixed to this piece of shining gold staring up at me. I couldn't believe it. Being a newbie at the time I actually thought the D mint mark had to be a good thing . I sent it to PCGS not expecting a high grade due to it jangling around with other dirty coins for who knows how long but it ended up MS 63 somehow. I'll never forget seeing that coin laying in the pile. Thanks for bearing with me, I've been waiting a long time to share that story. Enjoy the rest of the gold!
