Quote: I better start hanging around barns in upstate NY Gotta keep it rural, Blargish. I recommend the Ticonderoga-to-Chateaugay route, but a four-county loop implicating Vermont (Washington-Addison-Rutland-Rensselaer) has also turned up some good stuff for me (think Machin's Mills!). Not just barns, but junk shops, second-hand stores, farm stands, and wherever you see a roadside sign of any kind in someone's yard...that's considered an invitation for you to ask... For me, the best time for this sort of meandering has always been 1971-1977, but your mileage may vary.

Never seen in Charlton to my knowledge (and my editions go back to 1962), this is one of the 28 types identified by Fred Bowman in his noted 1966 Canadian Numismatic Journal article as Borderline Tokens, which were known to have circulated in pre-Confederation Canada but were missed, neglected, or otherwise overlooked by Breton and Leroux.
Because it's overstruck on an 1811 British token -- as all of these so-called Phoenix tokens are -- it's hard to tell that my specimen is actually a pretty respectable EF.
The faded old card I wrote up many years ago for this token's flip describes the obverse device as "Phoenix rising from a bowl of fruit."
Bowman 14, Withers 1610, Davis 105 (Somerset, after the host coin from Bristol), 34mm, 18.5g.

There hasn't been much going on around here lately, so I thought I'd post one of my better Wellies from the Picard's Peninsular series of halfpenny-sized tokens. Charlton recognizes and provides valuations for nine basic "types" and then adds (without values) various flan thickness, die rotation, proof, and off-metal varieties, so it can become a pretty interesting series for the dedicated and/or deep-pocketed specialist. This specimen is one of the more common types, but its grade gives it a big boost -- not to mention the eye appeal of all lustre all the time. Breton 987, Charlton WE-11A6, Withers 1515. CCCS slabbed at MS-65.
