So I found this '97 today, and I can't help but think it looks like a matte proof from the Botanic Gardens SMS. I keep telling myself it's not, but then I pick it up and look at it again... And I think, "well, maybe." What do you guys think? I took a few pictures of the fields just to show the grain. And those steps are awesome, right?

It appears to be a normal coin from what I can see. The obverse die is not as fresh as the reverse die is. May have been a replacement for the reverse die? Looks like your are using a ring light for your images. This gives a different look to the coin. A ring light floods the coin with light. A single light source creates light and shadow.

All I have is a loupe and my iphone. I'll try to get some better pics tomorrow. These pictures don't really show how satin-like it is in hand.

I pulled mine out and compared it. The one in your photo does not look like the matte finish to me.

Is the mint mark re-punched or is that Machine Doubling?

Circulation strike. The strike isn't strong enough for a proof, the steps aren't sharp enough and the rims are rounded.

Thanks guys. Pretty sure it was bad lighting mixed with late night coin roll hunting!
