Hey all,

I have done some research but it seems that I have a fake. The pitting in the metal looks real. Grade and value would be nice if it is real. Any information is greatly appreciated.

the white on the spade is just plaster or gypsum.
A lot of these are reproductions.
I know it sounds disapointing but the edges are to clean for casted coins.
Many of these coins are pictured upside down.

Modern copy.
It's not that the edges are too clean, but the lines are too regular. For a pointed foot spade you would have a coin between 1 and 2 mm thick with undefined edges (for this period type coin) and the characters are always in low relief for pointed foot spades.

For reference, look at:

Coole, Arthur: series of 7 books on early Chinese coinage
Fisher, George: Fisher's Ding (annotated translation of Ding Fubao's "Illustrated Guide to Chinese Old Coins")
Hartill, David: Chinese Cast Coins - concise guide to all Chinese coins
Shanghai Museum - Catalog of Chinese Coins in the Shanghai Museum ("Shanghai Daxi" the golden standard.) a set of these catalogs will set you back about $500 right now. And it's all in Chinese.

Hartill is available from Bob Reis, and I sell copies of Fisher's Ding. Coole is costly and has been out of print for 40+ years.
All 3 above use rubbings of genuine coins for illustrations, which helps identify fakes pretty handily.

I have a bunch of fake spades I bought for about $1 each a while ago. I sell them as key chains.
