I have a 2001 P 5 cent that looks more like a cupro-nickel in terms of how it is toning (i.e. it isn't as shinny as other P 5 cents and looks slightly tarnished). It weighed 3.9g vs. 4.0g for the shinny 2001 P I have. So that rules it out as a 4.5 cupro-nickel planchet. My guess is that it missed one of the electro-plating baths which would account for it being slightly under weight.

Anyone else seen this? Or am I just looking too hard?

Maybe it is only a difference between a MS and circulated coin?

I think is just the effect of circulation.

I think it sat on someone's dryer and has seen some laundry detergent. Normal wear and tear.

Thanks everyone. Being stuck in the US, I don't have the experience with what the multi-ply nickles look like when circulated. I got this one in a book and it just stood out as different from all the other P nickels which were uncirculated.
