I think this is a Alexius III scyphate, billon aspron trachy, but I have to say I have had a hard time with this. Am I on the right track?

That could be right - looks close to SB2011 - but wait for those who know Byzantine coinage better than me.

Not a lot of detail to go by, but it's pretty close to Alexius III SB-2012.

yes, that's it. that's one of my favorite types, its cool to see Jesus represented as a youth rather than the bearded older verion. here's mine..i never did figure out if it was 2012 or 2011. I guess it's the legend, and those with a strong center like ours tend to have weak fields. still a nice coin.
