I am curious as how to determine the value of a coin that has been struck by a misaligned die. I'm not talking about a MAD that can be commonly found. I am referring to coins that have some of the design missing. Here is an example of one that sold on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-D-Misa...em2598460a85I see the value for coins that are struck off center to be a little all over the place. I assume that is because of how much off center they are, the details they show and personal preference. Is it safe to judge a MAD coin in the same manner? If visible, will the year it was minted affect the value? I have been eyeing one at the coin shop I go to for some time but I feel his asking price is to high. I know he will come down some and I would like to make him an offer but I don't want to insult him. The coin he has looks similar to the one in the link I provided. I would appreciate any and all help  |

I think you have already done the research you need...ebay would be the source, and you have already looked there. Its just a coin, don't worry so much about offending the LCS owner and just make what you feel is a fair offer.

I was hoping that maybe someone who had more experience buying these types of errors would be able to tell me what the average going price is for them. I think the one I have listed from ebay sold for a high dollar. I wasn't able to find many similar examples to compare prices with so I kind of feel like I'm shooting in the dark. |

That was the first time I've seen one sell before. Seemed high to me, but the final price was less than $40.

The ability to attribute year of mintage & the % off center both play roles in determining the final value of your MAD.
Notice my avatar; you can't see the year (I know it to be post '82 because it weighs 2.4g instead of 3.1g) and it's about 20%-23% off center struck. I found it in pocket change (which is why I like it so much) but with half the date missing, only worth about $7.00

That price sounds a lot better. It is often on ebay, what amount it takes to get a coin instead of what it is worth. |
