Cleaned Or "toned"

Wade Pillar of the Community Canada 2785 Posts	Posted 01/14/2015 9:16 pm 1832 nova scotia one penny token, has a very faint rainbow / iridescent "toning". no signs of mechanical cleaning, but is this likely to be the result of a chemical dip? laquered / oiled? or possible natural toning? opinions appreciated Report this Post to the Staff

This piece has had the best part of 200 years to acquire the patina that it has. Patina wise, compare with contemporary British copper coins. I guess that if it has been cleaned, it must have been done with a rag and hard rubbing. That would make it quite difficult to distinguish between wear and cleaning. I don't think it has been cleaned, and has only experienced some light circulation wear. Nevertheless, cream metal polishes have been around for a long time; that would give credance to the idea of how the iridescent toning may have been acquired. Report this Post to the Staff

47P7 Pillar of the Community Canada 1505 Posts	Posted 01/15/2015 09:53 am coin is much too clean for its age. it looks to me like it has been "treated" simply by being soaked in hot water with or without a drop of dish soap and then with a soft tooth brush.. rinse etc... NOW, does that treatment qualify as "cleaned"? try it with an other cooper coin. Report this Post to the Staff

Wade Pillar of the Community Canada 2785 Posts	Posted 01/15/2015 2:48 pm thanks all, no scratches at all which I would expect with any sort of polishes / brushes. if I remember correctly in old thread mentioned that acetone can sometimes react with old copper in this way (depending on exposure to lighting). any others heard of this? NEXT question, would this distract you enough to not want it in your collection? (I'm struggling whether or not to replace my current example that is a probably a VF30 - but with more natural color) Report this Post to the Staff
