1798 8 reales, Viceroyality of the Río de la Plata, Potosí mint. From the "Cuzco hoard" -- a trunk full of silver coins, all minted in Potosí, but found in Peru in 2007.

The DSLR image really highlights the corrosion on this coin, even though the lighting was reasonably diffuse. The GIMP sinc/lanczos reduction makes it appear oversharpened.

1797 Emergency Issue Dollar of Great Britain set at a value of four shillings and nine pence, just shy of a crown, thus the descriptive phrase 'two kings heads and not worth a crown' for these coins. During this time the price of silver exceeded the value of British silver coinage so none could be minted. The Bank of England resorted to counter-marking other circulating currency with a face value higher than the silver content to keep them from being melted down. This example is a 1795 8 reales from Mexico City. Neither Charles IV nor George III were greatly admired during their time and these issues gained the nickname 'the head of a fool on the neck of an ass'.

Nice countermarked dollar!

A more conventional 1797 British coin - the copper twopence minted by Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint in Birmingham:

I have been wondering if any of these would show up today.
If so how many.

This is the smaller version of the coin above, one pence.
Or is it one penny. Not sure small is the right word,
it is about the size of a silver dollar but thicker.

1797

This one's even more corroded than the 1797 from yesterday.

This is my last US coin for this thread, other than a few "colonials".
