I ended up buying this coin over the summer off of ebay for just over $400. When I got it, the coin looked completely different, yet it was the same coin. The seller ended up doctoring the photos so that it looked better. This are the pictures I took of it right before I sent it back to him. So should I have kept it or not?

While the coin had some luster to it(it also looked like it was recently dipped) it was a very dark coin until you held it under direct sunlight.

Hi Amazon99,
Being you sent it back,I'll keep this short and sweet,
An 1817 goes for $175 in XF40 to $400 in AU50 in Coinvalues
I am no expert ,I would grade it an XF45,don't think it makes AU
that wear on the face and hair,or is that rub,or weak strike.
I do like the obv/rev die crack, and the position of the 1817 is neat.
Its a Newcomb 14.
Nice coin but I wouldn't have paid $400.
Can you post pix of the coin from the ebay ad ,just curious?

I won't argue with your decision. (An MS-61RB just sold on Heritage for 402.50 so there will be other opportunities to buy a coin that makes you happy.)

Were you buying it for date or type?

I'll try and find them. If anyone remembers, back when I was a newbie I posted a picture of a large cent that had an golden color to it. I just feel in love it. It really wasn't for anything special, but I guess you could say type. I'm glad that I returned it, and halfbust I paid just a few more dollars than what that one on heritage closed for. The good thing out of this, was that it was a good learning experience about buying coins from ebay.

Edit: Auction photos were added to the main post.

Well since your accurate pictures show an EF40 coin and the seller's pics show a bogus high-end AU coin, I definitely agree with sending it back. The seller's pictures are blatant misrepresentation!

Sending the coin back was a wise decision.

Definitely a good choice. $400 isn't chump change
