1658 Crown of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, a single year issue as he died that September. The crown is noted for its high strike quality due to the mechanized milling and press process introduced by Pierre Blondeau, former engineer of the Paris mint. The dies were produced by The Royal Mint's chief engraver, Thomas Simon and shows an 8 punched over 7 and a crack through the lower obverse. Cromwell ascended to this position, king in all but name, from his distinguished service in the Parliamentarian army during the English Civil War. The resignation of Lord Fairfax, lord general of the army, who opposed the execution of Charles I, left Cromwell at the head of the most powerful faction of the new republic in 1649. He assumed full control with the title of Lord Protector in 1653. At his death, his eldest son assumed the title but could not maintain the military dictatorship. Charles II gained the throne in 1660, ending this brief period of England without a monarch. I'm not sure I can top this one so it's likely to be the last crown I post here. Thanks to nalaberong for starting the thread.

I can't top that, but I do have some more to post anyway: Ottoman Empire, 20 kurush, 1917 This coin was issued by the Ottoman Empire towards the end of WWI, and the reverse is in quite poor condition, presumably because the deteriorating war situation was more important than making sure the mint was producing high-quality coins.

Quote: 1658 Crown of Oliver Cromwell Wow a Cromwell crown! Very interesting and historical piece. I've wanted one of those ever since high school when I saw the movie w/ Richard Harris entitled "Cromwell". I have the book by Anita Fraser. Here's mine of Cromwell, but alas only a half crown Least I get in trouble for only posting a half crown, I'd better post a full one. Here's one of my older crowns. Austria, Guildiner, 1486 I should also point out that my avatar is a silver crown. Can anyone guess which one?
