Mewar Kingdom was founded and ruled from the capital Chitrakoot by Rajputs who trace their ancestry to second century AD. They held their territory strongly until Akbar defeated them in 1568. Udaisingh the ruler of Mewar retreated and established Udaipur city in Aravalli hills as the capital of his state. His son Pratab regained some of the lost territory. The state, otherwise called "Chitrakoot Udaipur" had fluctuating fortunes until it became part of the state of Rajastan after Indian independence.
