I just ran across a really comprehensive list of these -

See: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jbourj/money.htm

What astonishes me is not how many such there are, but that some real some giants have never been so honored - in particular, I don't see that Werner Heisenberg or James Clerk Maxwell have made this list.

Francisco Jose de Caldas was rather Colombia's Benjamin Franklin. Lawyer, revolutionary, military engineer, and newspaper editor, he also was a geographer, mathematician, botanist, and even put in charge of the Astronomic Observatory in Bogotá.

That's a great note, Lucky Cuss. Loads of engraving and detail on it.

I'm actually rather surprised that this very common Bank Of England note honoring geologist, naturalist, and biologist Charles Darwin hasn't been shown here yet.

Italy 2000 Lire, showing Galileo.

Post-Your-Notes-Depicting-Scientists!

Persecuted by the Church for disseminating his discoveries and their implications, it took until 1992 (350 years after his death) before Pope John Paul II formally and publicly absolved Galileo of any wrongdoing. With fanfare, it was announced in 2008 that a statue of the founder of modern astronomy was actually going to be erected in the Vatican gardens, but the project was cancelled the following year.

Nobel prize winning physicist and chemist Maria Sklodowska Curie (Madame Curie) on a Polish 20 Zloty note. Although thought of as French, she was in fact born in Warsaw.

A statue of Nikola Tesla at Niagara Falls on this Yugoslavian 500 dinara banknote.

EDIT: The AZ in serial means the same as star in US paper money.
