Princetane Pillar of the Community 4628 Posts	Posted 06/08/2021 05:30 am Greece had at least 10 commemorative circulation coins for the 2004 Athens Olympics. 4 x 100 Drachma coins from 1997 to 1999 Top left - Ruins of temple of Hera at Olympia Top Right - Victory urn with rays Bottom Left - Wrestlers Bottom Right - Runner stretching his arms and getting ready to race. Ancient style with nude athletes, these coins all circulated as standard 100 Drachma coins. Top Left (Coin position corresponds to upper picture) - Runner on stylised track Top Right - Basketball team making goal Bottom Left - Judo I think or Taekwondo Bottom Right - Weightlifting. The top image shows ancient symbols and modern ones on the bottom image, these also celebrate other sporting events held in Athens during 1997/99 (I can't read much Greek). Princetane Pillar of the Community 4628 Posts	Posted 06/08/2021 05:37 am In 2000 were issued 6 more coins specifically rather than loosely dedicated to the 2004 Games. The values were 500 Drachma and they were Cupronickel rather than silver like previous coins at this value. Inflation had made this value worth just a couple of dollars each by 2000. Although commems, they did circulate until 2002 with the change to Euros and they minted 4 million of each coin, a lot in a country with 10 million people. All 6 coins showed the same obverse with Games Logo, date and face value. The other side had a different image for each coin. Top left - Spyridon Louis - Greek Marathon winner from 1896 games in traditional Dress Top Centre - Ancient Greek Athletes I suspect wrestling Top Right - Presentation and lighting of the Olympic Flame (At Delphi?) Bottom Left - Depiction of Glory Bottom Centre - Baron Pierre De Coubertin and President Vikelas - Founders of modern Olympics Bottom Right, Entrance arch into Olympia running stadium. Princetane Pillar of the Community 4628 Posts	Posted 06/08/2021 05:43 am Some photos from Olympia! Remains of Temple of Hera (100 Drachmes 1997), parts of this temple date from 600BC! The Olympic Arch into Olympia, we were told this dates from Roman times and so does the track, the Greeks ran on bare grass before this (Bottom right 500 Drachmes) Panatheniac stadium in Athens, this was from the 1896 games and built on a much earlier Roman structure, parts are ancient! Princetane Pillar of the Community 4628 Posts	Posted 06/08/2021 05:58 am Commonwealth Games now. Gorgeous New Zealand set of 4 silver dollars showing sports on them. This was for the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games - minted in 1989. Australian coins for 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast with Borobi the Koala Mascot, Australian Team Logo and National coat of arms. Also Invictus games for disabled Soldiers I think. Set of 5 coins issued in 2016 for Australian team in the Rio Olympic Games. Each coin has a ring corresponding to an Olympic ring colour. All the 2016 and 2018 Aussie coins had this portrait of the Queen. Report this Post to the Staff
