What I love about collecting coins is the artwork and history that each holds....and as I catalog my current and lost collection..I came across my Portuguesa Vasco da Gama, USA Columbian and the Columbus Voyage Half Dollars. Looks like my Lief Ericsons' have sailed away...

So I decided to start a "new field" to collect, Explorers.

Thought I'd find an existing topic here but after running through the 202 "post your ________" topics I found nothing with Explorers....

So help me find/build my want list...

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing what you all have....

Another explorer(s) that is also featured on our 1998 50 cent coin are Bass and Flinders.

Glad to see the topic - more than once I've thought about starting one!

Here's one from the US - a 2004 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark Silver Dollar. Captains Lewis and Clark are most remembered for their multi-year (1804-06) exploration of the Louisiana Purchase - territory purchased from France that essentially doubled the size of the US.

OK...off to a great start..Thanks for the replies so far...Just picked-up an example of the Aus. 1970 50 cent piece.

Now working on the NZ dollar coin, I have 3 candidates off of ebay
#1 133932086621
#2 133981356224
#3 175050450696 is this an original set from 1969?

Which one would you choose?

As far as the silver dollars go...I don't trust ebay anymore for silver...So I'll be looking for nice examples at the Long Beach Show next month

Yes - that's an original set in official Government packaging.

The UK has also issued a series of three NIFC £2 coins commemorating Captain Cook, but they don't actually bear his portrait. Here's one of them:

Here's the 1937 Roanoke Colony Memorial commemorative half dollar that depicts Sir Walter Raleigh on its obverse. Though Raleigh never traveled to/explored North America, he did sponsor multiple trips of exploration and colonization in what is now North Carolina.

Raleigh did personally venture to South America in the 1590s, however, leading an expedition in search of El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, (He didn't find it!)

There are many coins and medals that feature Raleigh's likeness - it can be a collecting subset all on its own!
