Sherman's medal was based on a bust done by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was sculpted by Michael Lantz. Issued in 1973, per the pamphlet notes, the obverse shows the left facing Sherman, an "Eagle of the Civil War." The sword through the cap depicts the split between North and South: Of the reverse, Lantz credits a Sherman quotation for his inspiration: "War is cruelty and you cannot refine it."
